Diethyl Malonate can be synthesized by reaction of chloroacetic acid salt with sodium cyanide followed by base hydrolysis. It is utilized for synthesis of artificial flavorings, vitamin B1 & B6. This compound has chemical formula C7H12O4 with molecular weight of 160.17 g/mol. It appears as colorless liquid having apple-like pleasant odor, which also makes it suitable to be used in formulation of perfumes. Diethyl Malonate is a diethyl ester of malonic acid having melting & boiling points of -50 & 199 degrees Celsius respectively. It is a water insoluble compound with flash point of 200 degrees Celsius.
